What is intuitive eating?

We are born natural intuitive eaters. Babies cry, they eat, they stop until they’re hungry again. Kids innately balance out their food intake, eating when they’re hungry and stopping once they feel full. As we grow older and rules and restrictions are set around food, we lose our inner intuitive eater. We learn to finish everything on our plate. We learn that dessert is a reward, or can be taken away if we misbehave.

Intuitive eating is a non-diet approach to wellness that helps you break the cycle of dieting, heal your relationship with food, and get back in touch with the intuitive eater inside of you. Intuitive eating is not a diet. It’s a way to learn to eat outside of the diet mentality, with a focus on using your own internal hunger, fullness, and satisfaction cues to guide eating choices. But it’s much more than just the ‘hunger-fullness diet’ – we will explore your food beliefs, behaviors, and self-talk while delving deep into what food means to you.

I’ve tried so many diets. Will this work for me?

Great news: is not a diet! Not only do diets not work – you’re either “on” them or “off” them, right? – they’re the root of many of your problems. 90 to 95 percent of diets fail, yet you blame yourself, not the diet. In reality, it’s the process of dieting that is the problem. Dieting increases your risk of gaining even more weight than you lost.

Intuitive eating is different. It helps you break free from the cycle of dieting and learn to eat food like it’s just food – finding balance and making peace with food (and exercise).

Will I lose weight?

While many of our clients are not happy in their bodies and would like to lose weight, this is not the focus or goal of our sessions. Weight loss must be put on the back burner as you go through the Intuitive Eating process. If you are focused on losing weight, you’ll undermine the Intuitive Eating process. We will certainly talk about your desire to change your weight, and your feelings about your body, but you will not be weighing in and we will not be using weight as an indicator of success or progress.

Some people naturally lose weight during this process, and others don’t. If you have been eating for emotional reasons or not paying attention to your intuitive signals, or if you’ve gone through a lifestyle change that caused unnatural weight gain, it’s likely that you’re not at your natural healthy weight right now. As you go through the intuitive eating process and heal your body from the diet mentality, your weight will stabilize at the place it is meant to be.

If I let myself eat whatever I want, won't I eat uncontrollably and gain weight?

This is a very normal concern. It’s important to recognize that it is the dieting mentality that causes overeating and binging. Once you learn to make peace with all foods – and your body knows you can have these foods whenever you want – you’ll be able to truly listen to your body’s feelings of hunger, fullness and satisfaction.

How long will this process take?

It depends. Intuitive eating is the opposite of dieting. While dieting is easy at the beginning and gets harder (or impossible) as time goes on, intuitive eating is much tougher up front. It seems simple (eat when you’re hungry, stop when you’re full) but it’s more complicated. You have to undo all of the diet mentality and food rules in your head, get rid of your internal food police, and create new habits. It takes a lot of time and introspection. But while it’s hard at first, once eating normally becomes actually normal, you’ll reach a place of eating and caring for yourself intuitively – for life.

I’m really busy, how will I find the time?

Life does not have a pause button. There’s never going to be a period time where things are suddenly easier. Often we throw the baby out with the bathwater and if we can’t do it all the way, we don’t do anything. Intuitive eating is not about perfection – that’s the beauty of it! Many of my clients are busy professionals, moms with days that are non-stop, or people who travel constantly. When you work with me you’ll learn how to make changes – and maintain them – in the midst of your normal, busy, life. We take care of our families and others we love, so why not do something to take care of ourselves?

General FAQs

How much does it cost?

Fees vary based on which dietitian you work with and what package you choose. Our package rates start at $299 per month and we offer a 15% discount if you decided to pay in full at the start of your package. We don’t offer a sliding scale but we do keep a couple of spots available for those who do need help financially. Contact us to receive information on pricing.

Why can't I just buy one session?

Healing your food and body issues is deep, brave, and oftentimes scary work. When you’ve been inundated with dieting messages for years, it takes time to rid your mind of this dieting mentality and work through your food issues. We offer package-based options so that we have enough time to spend together to be able to work through these issues.

Do you accept insurance?

We don’t accept insurance but we can provide you with a superbill (medical receipt) upon request. If you have out-of-network benefits as part of your health insurance, you may be able to be reimbursed a percentage of the fee for our services. To determine whether your insurance will reimburse you, you should contact them directly. The following questions may help determine your reimbursement eligibility:

  • Do I have out-of-network benefits to see a registered dietitian for the following CPT codes: initial session 97802, follow-up sessions 97803
  • If yes, what amount of the fee will you cover?
  • Is pre-authorization required in order to submit an out-of-network claim?
  • What is the deductible, and how much of the deductible have I met?

I don’t live in Las Vegas, can we still work together?

Absolutely! I work with all of my clients virtually. We will meet via video conference or phone call and communicate between sessions using email. You get the same high-quality coaching support without having to leave the comfort of your own home or office.
